Babakhanian |
Tonight's artist, Armen Babakhanian, was a winner at several of world's most
prestigious international piano competitions including the Van Cliburn, Leeds,
William Kapell, the World Piano Competition and Utah's own Gina Bachauer
International Artists Piano Competition.
Following triumphs in the international competition arena, Mr. Babakhanian
subsequently performed concerts and recitals with major orchestras
throughout the world including the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic under Yuri
Temirkanov, the Moscow Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev and the City of
Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle. Other appearances
have included performances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal
Scottish National Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic and
the Utah Symphony.
He has appeared as a festival artist in the Aspen, Interlochen, Santander (Spain),
festivals. During the 2006-2007 season, Mr. Babakhanian will be heard in
performances in Germany, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Slovenia, Switzerland, Russia,
China, Japan, Israel, Argentina, Brazil, as well as the United States. In 2004, Mr.
Babakhanian became a Founder and Artistic Director of "Cadence" Ensemble.
In April 2004, "Cadence" went on a worldwide tour which included ten
performances in Buenos Aires at the famous Teatro Colon.
Mr. Babakhanian may be heard in recordings on the ASV and Real Sound labels,
and his recent recording of teh Tchaikovsky piano sonatas has received rave
reviews in the European press.
In addition to his performing career, Mr. Babakhanian has served as a jury
member for several international piano competitions, including the Prokofiev
International Piano Competition, the Rachmaninoff International Piano
Competition as well as the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition.
In 1999, he founded and served as Artistic Director for teh Armenian Legacy
International Piano Competition in his native Yerevan, Armenia.
He has taught numerous master classes in Russia, Great Britain, Spain, Japan
and the United States. He is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Komitas
State Conservatory in Yerevan, where he also received his musical education.
As the newly appointed Artistic Director of the Yerevan International Piano
Competition, Mr. Babakhanian will preside at the new competition to be held
in Yerevan, Armenia in April-May 2008.
