2006 Finalist's Biography

Stephen Beus, USA

Stephen Beus was born and raised in Othello, Washington as the fourth of eight children. He began lessons at age five and made his orchestral debut four years later playing Mozart’s Concerto in A Major, K. 488. Since then, Beus has performed concerti by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Prokofieff with orchestras in the United States and Europe.

Equally active as a competitor, Beus has garnered top prizes in international and national competitions. He was the first prize winner of the Junior Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the Pre-College winner of the Corpus Christi International Young Artists Competition. Beus was the national winner of the Music Teachers National Association High School Division Competition in 2000 and also won the collegiate level of the same competition in 2003, for which he received a Steinway Model M piano. In April, 2004, he was top prize winner of the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition and performed in Weill Recital Hall. Most recently, Beus was selected to be one of five pianists to compete for the Classical Fellowship Awards in the 2005-2006 season.

Described by Fort Worth Star Telegram as a pianist with “artistic instinct and natural charisma,” Stephen Beus is a frequent recitalist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician and is a current scholarship student in the graduate program at The Juilliard School.
