Born in Japan, Akiko Ebi was educated in her native country and won the First Prize at the National Competition of Music in Japan. She continued her training at the Conservatoire National et Superieure de la Musique et de Danse in Paris. Professors such as Vlado Perlemuter, Aldo Ciccolini, Louis Kentner and Monique de la Brucholerie contributed to the formation of the superior artistry of this distinguished pianist who eventually captured prizes in the Long-Thibaud International Piano Competition in 1975 and the Chopin International Piano Competition of 1980.
Her career as an international recitalist, collaborator in many chamber ensembles, and soloist with orchestras throughout the world have placed her in the forefront of much sought-after pianists.
She has been heard in concert with orchestras as L’Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, l’Orchestra Philharmonique de Radio France and orchestras in Luxembourg, Slovakia, Japan and many other countries. She has performed with the Parisii, Manfred and Via Nova Quartets as well as the Morauges Quintet.
She is a frequently heard artist at many festivals in Europe, South America and her native Japan. Recent engagements have been La Roque d’Anthéron, Menton, Echternach, Folle Journée de Nantes, Lisbon, Toledo and Tokyo.
Miss Ebi is a much sought-after jury for international competitions, having served as a member of the juries at the Clara Haskil, Long-Thibaud, Martha Argerich, Montreal, Vianna da Motta, Porto, and the José Iturbi International Piano Competitions.
A recording artist of distinguished reputation, Akiko Ebi has recorded the works of Chopin, Brahms, Liszt, Franck, Webern, Pierné and received the Grand Prix d’Or for her recording of the works of Fumet and the Japanese composer Hikari Oi, which resulted in a second Grand Prix d’Or Japonais.
Regarded as one of the most sympathetic and knowledgeable artists of French music and culture among all Japanese pianists, she was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 1993.
