2005 Juror's Biography

Mi Kyung Kim, South Korea

Mi-Kyung Kim began piano studies at the age of five, eventually entering the Seoul National University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. She later undertook further studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, gaining her Master of Arts degree. At the Mannes College of Music she earned a degree in professional studies, and at New York University she was granted her doctorate degree. With her active and continuous performing activity since her debut in New York in 1992, she has widened her stage globally. Her teaching method also has been already proven by the successes of her many talented students in Korea, and this fact secures her a stable position in the field and made her the busiest musician who is regularly invited to various international piano competitions and master classes in Utrecht in Netherlands, Moscow in Russia, Dortmund in Germany, Bolzano in Italy, Salt Lake in USA, Texas in USA, Epinal in France, Shanghai in China, Taipei in Taiwan and so on.

By now, she was invited to give concerts at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Concert Hall, Merkin Concert Hall in New York, Beijing Concert Hall in China and Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, as well as to play with New York Metropolitan Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Moscow State Symphony Radio, Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Hungarian Symphony orchestra, Vienna Mozart Orchestra and Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In Korea, she gave concerts at Seoul Arts Center, Hoam Art Hall and Chopin Hall, and was invited to play with most of Korean Orchestras, such as Korean Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and so on.

Her CD library includes "Mozart Piano Concertos" from Numbus Records with Vienna Symphony, "Schumann Carnaval" from Seong Um Records, "Saint Saens Concerto Live Performance" and many other albums on Bach, Schubert and Chopin. It is noteworthy that Mi-Kyung Kim is a first Korean who released "Lee, Young-Jo's Korean Piano Music" in the international market from the London based ASV Records. In 2001, the January issue of Germany's Gramophone magazine wrote "My Kim's performances are sensitive and beautifully crafted throughout and are complemented by a very natural sound recording."

She has become a faculty of Seoul National University since 1996. And in 2002, the International Piano Academy in Lake Como, Italy invited her to be its vice president & professor and she, ever since, has been dedicating herself to foster young talents who can rejuvenate the world music society with other worldly famous pianists like Rou Ts' ong, Dmitri Bashkirov, Leon Fleisher, Menahem Pressler and Martha Argerich.
