Bringing Music to the lives of Children

In addition to its international competitions and concerts, the Gina Bachauer International Foundation presents an outreach program entitled Music-In-Our-Schools. As music curricula are becoming increasingly rare in public schools, Music-In-Our-Schools often provides the first exposure to classical music for local school children. This unique program pairs world-class pianists with local elementary schools to introduce the fundamentals of classical and other genres of music and the acoustics of a Steinway grand piano. The children are taught concert behavior and the mechanics of sound, rhythm and harmony on the piano. Annually, this program reaches some 25,000 students in elementary schools across the Wasatch Front, reaching students from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds, who are also offered free tickets to other Bachauer events.

The Bachauer Foundation’s Music-In-Our-Schools program has visited more than 300,000 children along the Wasatch Front since its inception in 1999. Many of these young audiences include underserved populations and who were unfamiliar with classical piano music before Bachauer artists visited them. Bachauer programs are provided at no cost to the schools or parents. The objectives for Music-In-Our-Schools are to encourage the formal study of piano, build younger audience attendance at classical music concerts, and instill a lifelong love of music. Music-In-Our-Schools is evaluated through surveys and correspondence with principals, teachers, parents and participating students.

The growing demand for this program within the schools is reflected by the response from schools and students. Principals learn of these educational concerts taking place in other schools and immediately call the Bachauer office inquiring how their schools can participate. Students often send letters and drawings expressing their delight with the musical experience.

Our dream for the future is to have all students in Utah schools gain an appreciation for fine music. We hope that by experiencing the sound of a Steinway grand piano being played by a world-class artist in an intimate environment, these students will be instilled with a life-long desire to seek or create beautiful music.
