Di-Yi Tang was born into a musical family in Shanghai, China. He entered the Shanghai Conservatory Preparatory Division at the age of 7. He made his professional debut at the age of 12 with the Shanghai Symphony. In 1996, he won the Bronze Medal at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Moscow where he was the youngest Chinese winner in the Competition’s history. Mr. Tang earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Mannes College of Music, where he studied with Pavlina Dokovska. After winning the Mannes college concerto competition, Di-Yi Tang made his Lincoln Center debut with the Mannes Orchestra under the baton of David Hayes, playing Chopin Piano Concerto No.1. He has performed as a guest soloist with the Moscow Symphony, Orchestra National de Lyon, Beijing Symphony, and Shanghai Symphony. As a recitalist, Mr. Tang has performed in the Great Hall of Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, in New York City at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, at the 92nd Street Y, Steinway Hall, and the United Nations, at the Cleveland Playhouse, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Ateneo Concert Hall in Spain, and Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore. He has also performed for the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, the Fazioli Concert Series in New Jersey, the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York, and the Spring of Shanghai Festival in China. Mr. Tang has appeared on radio broadcasts including “Voice of America,” “The McGraw-Companies Young Artists Showcase” (WQXR), and on the American Chinese television program, “The Rising Star.” Currently, Mr. Tang is completing his Doctor of Musical Arts program under the guidance of Dr. Min Kwon at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. He serves as Associate Faculty at The Center for Musical Excellence and at the Extension Division of the Mason Gross School.
